Consultation FAQs

Do I need a referral from my GP to see a specialist?

No, you don't need a referral from your GP to make an appointment with one of our specialists. We accept both self-referrals and referrals from GPs or other healthcare providers. If you'd like to self-refer, simply give us a call on 03 968 3140 or complete our Patient enquiry form and our team will contact you to arrange an appointment.

How do I make an appointment?

Making an appointment is simple. You can call us directly on 03 968 3140 or fill out our Patient enquiry form at your convenience. Once we receive your details, a member of our team will contact you to arrange an appointment. We'll also let you know if there's anything you need to prepare ahead of your visit.

How much does a consultation cost?

Consultation fees can vary depending on the type of appointment, the specialist you see, and the complexity of your condition. For an accurate estimate, please contact our team directly. We'll be happy to provide detailed information about costs, as well as any potential follow-up or treatment fees so you know exactly what to expect.

How do I know which specialist is right for me?

Not sure who to see? Our friendly team is here to help. You're welcome to call and speak with one of our staff, who can discuss your symptoms, concerns, and goals to help determine which specialist is best suited to your needs. You can also explore our Specialist Profiles to learn more about each Surgeon's background, areas of expertise, and approach to care. We'll make sure you're matched with the right specialist for your situation so you can receive the most appropriate and effective treatment from the start.

Can I choose which specialist I see?

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to request a specific specialist when booking your appointment. We will do our best to accommodate your preference based on availability and clinical suitability. If you're unsure who to see, our team can also help match you with the most appropriate specialist for your needs.

Can my appointment be a phone consult?

Yes – we offer both in-person and telehealth (phone) consultations where appropriate. Telehealth appointments can be a convenient option for follow-up reviews or for patients who live further away. Please note that for most initial consultations, an in-person visit is generally required so your specialist can perform a full assessment.

Endoscopy & Procedure FAQs

Can I drive myself home after my procedure?

No. If you have sedation or a general anaesthetic, you must not drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours following your procedure. You will need a support person to collect you and stay with you after your procedure.

Is there any preparation involved?

Yes. Most procedures require some preparation beforehand to ensure the best possible results and your safety.

Depending on the procedure, preparation may include:

  • Avoiding certain foods
  • Following a clear liquid diet for a period of time
  • Taking bowel preparation medication
  • Fasting (being nil by mouth) before your procedure

The specific preparation required will depend on the procedure you are having. Our team will explain this during the booking process, and detailed instructions will be included in your procedure pack.

Can I take all my usual medications before my procedure?

Not always. Some medications and supplements may need to be stopped or adjusted before your procedure.

It is important that you tell us about all medications you are currently taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Our nursing team will advise you which medications you can continue and which should be withheld prior to your procedure.

If I have insurance, do I need to get prior approval?

If you are insured with a non-affiliated provider, you will generally be responsible for obtaining your own prior approval before your procedure.

If you are covered by Southern Cross Health Insurance, we may be able to arrange prior approval on your behalf for a number of commonly performed procedures, as we are a Southern Cross affiliated provider.

Can I book directly for a procedure?

Yes. In some cases, you may be able to book directly for a procedure without needing an initial consultation.

Eligibility for direct access depends on several factors, including your symptoms, medical history, and health insurance provider. Our team can assess your situation and advise whether this option is suitable for you.
